When was the last time you made an active change in your office, in order to brighten up yours or your colleagues day? It might sound like a no-brainer, but making an effort to improve your work environment will pay off massively in future productivity. That’s why this month, we’re suggesting some things you might like to try, in order to make you feel better (and work better!)

When we visited Clerkenwell Design Week in May, we were struck by how many displays featured plants – they not only make an office look great, but come with a variety of other benefits too. That’s why this week, we’re rounding up a few potential options that you can add easily to your own office… and the advantages of each one!

1. Peace Lily

This attractive plant has a distinctive appearance, thanks to its large leaves and strikingly-shaped flowers.

It’s a great choice for less green fingers (and less bright offices), as it thrives in the shade and requires little sunlight, as well as needing watering only once a week.

Despite its low-maintenance lifestyle, this plant works hard – as well as oxygenating your office, it breaks down and neutralizes toxic gases like benzene, formaldehyde, and carbon monoxide.

2. Spider Plant

This plant has an unusual feature that’s a great talking point in your office – it produces tiny versions of itself at the end of long stems (these mini-spider plants are known as plantlets).

So if your colleague gets plant envy from the spider plant on your desk, just keep taking care of it and you can soon gift them a tiny version of their very own!

Not only is this plant attractive and easy to care for, it also does a good job of removing formaldehyde from the air.

3. Aloe Vera

Want to make sure your plant is on trend? Aloe Vera is not only a succulent (if you’re not sure what this family of plants looks like, take a look at almost every interior design Pinterest board put together in the last few years) but it’s also known to have loads of fabulous health benefits. So when someone visits your desk, you’ll have something great to chat about!

Being a succulent, it likes relatively dry conditions, and not too much harsh sunlight. This makes it a great choice for those who don’t always have time to remember to water their office plants…

4. Dracaena Fragrans

Looking for a plant with a bit more drama? This could be the one for you!

This distinctive, shiny-leafed plant is a great way to add some extra wow-factor to your workplace, and it will happily tolerate a bit of watering neglect (as well as low light conditions).

It earns its keep by removing indoor pollutants such as xylene and toluene, so if you want to add style and substance to your office, this could be a great choice.

5. Gerbera Daisy

For those who want a more classic flower, you can’t go wrong with the ever-popular Gerbera Daisy.

It’s simple to care for (just water deeply whenever the top of the soil feels dry to the touch), but does like some nice, bright sunlight. So if you’ve got an empty windowsill, then this cheery little flower is the perfect way to brighten it up!
